Working at Eyemouth High School
General information about the school
Eyemouth High School is a rural state secondary school in the Scottish Borders, located in the south east of Scotland. Our catchment area includes Ayton, Cockburnspath, Coldingham, Eyemouth and Reston. The current school roll is approximately 500. This has been growing year on year as young people wish to attend the school.
In January 2019, Eyemouth High School received a very positive school inspection. The inspection team found the following strengths in the school’s work.
- There is a very positive climate for learning in all curriculum areas. Almost all young people are motivated to achieve well and they work successfully with their teachers.
- Guided effectively by the senior leadership team, staff demonstrate clear commitment to improving the learning experiences of all young people. They take part in considerable professional learning. This includes them working well in a motivated learning and teaching improvement group, and using carefully-selected educational research to develop their knowledge and skills.
- The school provides young people with a wide range of opportunities to help them achieve success. Effective partnership working also provides support for targeted groups of young people who face potential barriers to their learning. This is leading to these young people engaging more positively in their learning.
The full report is available on this website or on the Education Scotland website.
In June 2019, we were awarded the GTCS Excellence in Professional Learning Award, which recognises the work that we do as a school to continuously improve the quality of teaching and learning for our students.
In February 2020, we have been awarded SEIC Research School status with the South East Improvement Collaborative. This will help us to look even more closely at our learning and teaching using Professional Enquiry, with particular reference to the INSPIRE technology project we are involved in.
Our improvement journey has been really pleasing over the last eight years. For example we have seen the percentage of pupils achieving 5+ Level 5 Awards in S4 increase from around 25% to consistently around the 50% mark. Over 97% of our young people will go on to a positive destination after leaving the school.
Key information for prospective staff
We believe Eyemouth High is a great place to work. We work collaboratively as a staff to ensure that high quality learning and teaching are at the heart of what we do. We have developed some key resources, such as the Lesson Evaluation and Development Toolkit, which represent best practice and put professional learning at the heart of improvement in the school.
We work hard to support our young people, whether through our universal offer, or more targetted approaches for some. As a small school there are opportunities to make an impact in every aspect of school life, from supporting health and wellbeing activities, to running key activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh's scheme to contributing to the school through our Learning and Teaching Improvement group.
We are a small and friendly school with big ambitions for our young people. Our staff travel here easily across the Border, from other towns or villages in the Borders and especially travelling down the A1 from East Lothian and towards Edinburgh. We are fully staffed every year which is testament to the school's reputation. The whole area is stunningly beautiful and offers a great place to live and settle.
